So I guess I should be working on Sockapalooza. . . .

But I'm not. The pattern choice is not coming easy since my pal has already knit the one I had my heart set on making. A trip to Barnes and Nobles tomorrow should clear that all up. Yes, I'm buying a knitting book.(Sensational Knitted Socks, I think) It will only be my 3rd knitting book in 4 years of knitting but its seems like the right thing to do. I want my sock pal to be happy, and I also want to be happy.(Instead of frustrated as I am when I think of designing my own sock pattern) Sockapalooza is about fun NOT stress and the free patterns just aren't doing it for me.
That said, I have just cast on for a sweater for myself. #10 from Vogue knitting spring/summer '07 out of the turquoise yarn. I have been scheming and designing for the yarn but today I am going to knit with it. Hopefully it'll be something I'll wear. I have such bad luck with that.
Which brings me to my last point. I finished the tank that was destined for the sheep and wool last night and its too.short. I just got so tired of stockinette stitch that I shortened it a whole inch. I'm kicking myself now. There is some good news though. I did a seed stitch neckline and it looks beautiful.
Pics sometime this week and all about the sheep and wool!

It's difficult to know what to knit, especially if your pal doesn't have a blog. I can highly reccomend "Knitting Vintage Socks" and "Knitting on the Road", both by Nancy Bush - they have some lovely patterns in them and have very clear instructions.

Good luck finding your chosen pattern!

I was going to suggest Knitting Vintage Socks too!
Sensational Knitted Socks has some great variety too, for varying skill levels.
Have fun deciding what to knit- I often find that's the hardest part...

I'm with both Mithranstar and Di, Knitting Vintage Socks has been on my favorites list for quite a while.

But there are also wonderful patterns at knitty.com that are totally free. Just search by socks. I'm sure you know this, but I love them. I've also found a couple of sock pattern directories here and here.

Happy sock browsing!

I agree with the Nancy Bush books, but I am recently loving "Favorite Socks" by Interweave Press. It is a collection of the best patterns from the last 10 years of Interweave Knits. Gold!

I am waiting for the IK Favorite socks and Sensational knitted socks to arrive before I make a decision. My pal is making the socks for her pal that I was thinking about making for her! I think deciding on a pattern is the hardest part.

I love Sensational Knitted Socks because the patterns are so flexible. My sock pal's preferences made one of the yarns I had in my stash seem like the obvious choice, so I picked a pattern around that.
